You know you have to be a ferocious competitor with a name like Miltiadis, the famed Greek commander that wrecked Persia during the first invasion – and wreck he did, even defeating a dubious Empty Jar deck on his way to the World Championship crown. Just like that fateful day at Marathon BCE, the Greeks were screaming “Nike” in celebration of a World Championship win.

The 2005 World Championship also took place during the most nostalgic of all nostalgic formats – Goat Format. This deck exploited Scapegoat and Metamorphosis to do all sorts of fun things. The most popular of course was the Tsukuyomi + Thousand-Eyes Restrict Lock. This combination of cards took your opponent’s monsters away, chipped away at their lifepoints, then rinsed and repeated.

A popular variation on the Goat strategy was to splash engines that produced Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys and Vampire Lord, because those cards were indifferent to the majority of trap line-ups of that time. They would simply continue to revive themselves during the Stand-by Phase after being popped. The benefit was you could maintain advantage while reducing the opposing position.

You could very easily summon the big chicken by offering up a Sheep Token with Hand of Nephthys. Typically, the guy that passed up a role in Twilight came out through Pyramid Turtle and may or may not have been accompanied by Spirit Reaper and Book of Life.

The deck also contained the “Holy Trinity” of pluses in Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, and Delinquent Duo. Quite common at this time, if you saw one of those cards and your opponent did not, it was GG EZ.
