#TBT: Worlds 2003-2005
The 2014 Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship is just around the corner, so I thought it would be nice to take a stroll down memory lane. Throughout this article we will explore the first three World Championships in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. This takes us back to a time long before Pendulums, XYZ, and Synchro Monsters, before the Extra Deck had a 15 card cap and wasn’t even called the Extra Deck.
The very first World Championship took place during 2003 in ‘The World’s Most Famous Arena’. That’s right – MADISON SQUARE GARDEN! The same Madison Square Garden that Bruno Sammartino sold out like a hundred million times. The very venue Jay Z played, back when he still had a hyphen, on the same tour where Carline told ‘Ye he could buy two tickets. The place where the Rangers and Knicks play. Yes, in MSG, Yu-Gi-Oh! crowned its first King of Games.
Ng Yu Leung won the inaugural competition with a deck that looked a lot like the Forbidden/Limited list at the time (at least in respect to the Jinzo + Spell lineup). This deck is built to exploit the basic game theory of card advantage. The list is packed with floaters to maintain advantage, effects that reduce the opponent’s hand, and finally cards that make the opponent unable to draw.
All and all this list is perhaps one of the most netdecked decklists of all time. I can still remember seeing this deck alongside Shigeki Kitamura’s in Beckett YuGiOh Magazine.
