Patrik
Hello and welcome to my tournament report for YCS London were I reached the top 32 with Artifact-Shaddoll before losing against the soon-to-be winner of the YCS, Marcello Barberi. Congratulations again to him for this formidable performance.

On Friday, me and Claudio arrived at 5 pm at the airport in London, then 2 hours later we arrived our apartment which was located 5 minutes from the venue with Long, Ciplak, Peter, Ricarda, Domenic and Laczko also staying there. After grabbing something to eat and deciding what our final cards in the deck should be we fell asleep pretty exhaustively into bed at 3:30am.

After a too short of a night we woke up at 7 and got showered, wrote out our deck lists and headed to the location were we needed to get our last cards for our decks and shortly thereafter I had an interview with Oliver Gehrmann then the first round started.

Round 1 Lightsworn 2:0

Game 1:

I lose the dice roll and my opponent decided to go first. I´m pretty taken back as he starts off with Solar Recharge sending Wulf, Lightsworn Beast and milling 2 Minerva to grave which allowed him to mill 2 more cards. After a normal summoned Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn that milled 2 Necro Gardna and a Wulf they pass it to my turn. I´m started off things with a Shaddoll Fusion for El Shaddoll Construct and a Chaos Sorcerer after special summoning Shaddoll Falco and sending Shaddoll Beast to draw 1 I banished Raiden and destroyed Wulf. I have a Artifact Sanctum and a Vanity’s Emptiness set with an Effect Veiler in Hand as I pass the turn back to them. After he draws I flip my Vanity’s Emptiness and he concedes as he has no out to it.

Sideboard:
In:
Raigeki, Felis, Mind Control and 1 Mystical Space Typhoon.

Out:
2 Lyla, Wiretap and Burst Rebirth.

Game 2:

He also starts the second game milling Breakthrough Skill and Wulf with Raiden’s effect in the End Phase after setting 3 cards. I´m again starting with Shaddoll Fusion for Shaddoll Construct to send Saddoll Falco which specialed summoned itself and then I take out his Raiden, which goes through successful. After setting Vanity’s Emptiness and Shadow Games I pass and my opponent mills 5 more with Needlebug Nest. Proceeding with aggressive play he opts to summon Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner and target Raiden with her effect, so I have to activate my Vanity’s Emptiness as I don´t want to lose my Shaddoll Construct to Michael. Next he tries to kill off my Shaddoll Construct with Wulf backed up by honest Honest but as I point out the effect of Shaddoll Construct his Wulf is destroyed. After Raigeki wipes his field I summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and Mathematician for game.

Round 2 HAT 2:0

Game 1:
I lose the dice roll yet again and as previously my opponent opts to start. He does so by summoning Traptrix Myrmeleo searching Time Space Trap Hole and setting 4 cards to his backrow. After baiting out his backrow over several turns I manage to resolve some fusion’s and the game is over for him.

Sideboard:
In:
2 Dimensional Prison and 2 trap stun.

Out:
1 Effect Veiler, 2 Vanity`s Emptiness and 1 Chaos Sorcerer

Game 2:
My Opponent starts again with Traptrix Myrmeleo, this time with 5 set. I have a pretty rough hand for him as it contains 2 Lyla, lightsworn sorceress, Mathematician, Artifact Sanctum, Shaddoll Squamata and Shaddoll Fusion. So I start with summoning Lyla which gets hit by Bottomless Trap Hole. After only setting the Artifact Sanctum I pass the turn and my opponent decides to activate double cyclone targeting his own Artifact Sanctum which he activates thus destorying my set card which allows me to hit a backrow. Which turns out to be Call of the Haunted. After setting 1 card he pushes for 3600 damage and ends. I start things off with a Mathematician sending dragon to destroy his set Time Space Trap Hole from the first turn, following up with a fusion to seal the deal as he has another Double Cyclone set and he loses his Artifact Moralltach and the game this turn.

Round 3 Geargia Hands 2:0

Game 1:
I lose the dice roll and my opponent starts with only setting spell/traps, my hand is pretty awkward as well after my >Shaddoll FusionSolemn Warning but I´m starting to beating down with Shaddoll Squamata and after a few turns where a Shaddoll Dragon also joined in on the fun. My opponent tries to make a Gear Gigant X but a Artifact Sanctum of mine sets the duel in my favor.

Sideboard:
In:
2 Raiza, 2 Stormforth, 2 Trap Stun, 2 Mystical Space Typhoon and Raigeki.

Out:
2 Effect Veiler, 2 Chaos Sorcerer, 2 Vanity´s Emptiness, 1 Shaddoll Beast, Super Poly and Burst Rebirth.

Game 2:
My opponent starts with a set monster and 3 set spell/trap cards, after summoning lyla which destroy’s a set Dimensional Prison I set an Artifact Sanctum and a Sinister Shadow Games before milling Shaddoll Beast and destroying his Shadow Mirror he activated in response with Mystical Space Typhoon. After getting his Gear Gigant X hit yet again by Artifact Moralltach he sets another monster and ends after I activate Sinister Shadow Games special summoning Shaddoll Falco after sending Shaddoll Squamata. After flipping Shaddoll Falco getting Shaddoll Beast and synchro summoning Black Rose Dragon he stares down a field of >El Shaddoll Construct

Round 4 against Billy Brake Control 2:0

Game 1:
My Opponent wins the Dice roll and starts with the Mathematician, Sinister Shadow Games combo, whereas I have got nothing special with Shaddoll Hedgehog, Effect Veiler, Sinister Shadow Games and Artifact Moralltach with 2 cards i can’t remember. So we trade resources back and forth where he makes a crucial mistake afterwards in summoning Shaddoll Construct, popping my backrow with Shaddoll Dragon (set Artifact Moralltach) that destroys his Shaddoll Beast and leaving Shaddoll Construct on the field after that, so I now get a free Shaddoll Fusion after destroying his 1 backrow (Vanity’s Emptiness) with Shaddoll Dragon, end of turn.

Sideboard:
In:
2 Raiza, 2 Stormforth and 2 trap stun

Out:
2 Chaos Sorcerer, 2 Lyla, Burst Rebirth and Wiretap

Game 2:
This game was over pretty fast as I was playing monsters against traps so he didn´t stand a chance.

Round 5 Burning Abyss 2:0

Game 1:
I won the dice roll and I have a pretty bad hand all things considered, consisting of Effect Veiler, Burst Rebirth, Shaddoll Squamata, Breakthrough Skill and Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. So i just set 2 backrow and pass, my opponent wants to kick things off with Kuribandit but gets halted by Breakthrough Skill, afterwards he activates Supply Squad and sets 3 spells/traps. After drawing another Effect Veiler for my turn I summon Shaddoll Squamata and attack, he gets a card for Supply Squad. Tour guide from the Underworld gets summoned and veiled before a second Supply Squad is activated. I summon Shaddoll Dragon and attack with both but Shaddoll Dragon gets sent back to hand with Compulsory Evacuation Device and he draws 2 cards after Tour Guide of the Underworld gets destoryed by Shaddoll Squamata, end of turn he searches another Tour Guide before summoning it which gets it´s effect negated as well. I draw Solemn Warning for the turn and resummon Shaddoll Dragon to attack with both for a total of 4300 damage. After setting the Solemn Warning I end my turn and he searches the third Tour Guide from the Underworld. As the summon gets negated my opponent sighs quite heavily and passes. I attack with both my monsters and he has no response, so I won with the worst hand against Burning abyss.

Sideboard:
In:
3 Trap Stun, 1 Prison and Raigeki.

Out:
Wiretap, Burst Rebirth, 1 Vanity´s Emptiness, 1 Beast and 1 Chaos Sorcerer.

Game 2:
He starts with a special summon of a Burning Abyss monster and tributing it for Vanity’s Fiend but with no backrow. I start with Raigeki and Shaddoll Fusion so as he draws no traps the game is pretty much over.

Round 6 60-Card Control 2:0

Game 1:
I lose the die roll and my opponent starts. This game is very back and forth as he is able to summon a Shaddoll Construct, Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss and a Mechquipped Angineer, but I get to summon a Shaddoll Construct of my own and a Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning to banish his Shaddoll Construct and get rid of the material of dante. After top decking a Shaddoll Fusion my opponent summons a >Leo, the Keeper of the Sacred TreeChaos Sorcerer into Crimson Blader.

Sideboard:
In:
3 Trap Stun, 1 Prison and Raigeki.

Out:
1 Veiler, 1 Sorcerer, 1 Beast., Wiretap and Burst Rebirth.

Game 2:
My opponent starts again and this game also drags on quite a while to the point where I banish his Dante Traveler of the Burning Abyss without any materials with Chaos Sorcerer, after destroying Downerd Magician with Construct holding Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Begninning in hand along with a few Shaddolls and an Artifact Sanctum. After tributing Beast and setting Sanctum I end the turn. He summons Majesty’s Fiend after tributing my Shaddoll Beast with The Monarchs Stormforth running over my Chaos Sorcerer and setting a card, that turns out to be an Vanity’s Emptiness. After drawing for my turn as I have no out as of now for both these I take a direct hit from Majesty’s and then I have to set Shaddolls in 2 consecutive turns until finally I draw trap stun and end the game next turn with BLS and a normal summon.

Round 7 against Long Dao with Shaddoll 2:0

Game 1:
I win the dice roll and let him start as we both play a nearly identical Shaddoll list. This game is also very back and forth upon trading resources but comes to a finish as I top deck Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and manage to OTK him with Chaos Sorcerer and BLS.

Sideboard:
In:
1 Raiza, 1 Stormforth and Mind Control. As I don’t know if he lets me start.

Out:
1 Sorcerer, 1 Lyla and Burst Rebirth.

Game 2:
He lets me start and I can´t remember how I started exactly but it was pretty good and this game is over as he activates super polymerization and I activate my own super polymerisation afterwards.

Round 8 against Satellar 2:0

Game 1:
I won the dice roll and knew that my opponent played Satellar so I went first and set Shaddoll Hedgehog, Artifact Sanctum and Wiretap. He opened pretty normal with Satellarknight Deneb and some backrows after taking hedgehog out. I started the beatdown with Shaddoll Dragon after 1 of my 2 Shaddoll Fusions in hand got stopped by Vanity’s Emptiness and destroyed Deneb. After using Altair he summon’s Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer so put my Shaddoll Dragon away. I just fused for free, had Wiretap for his 2nd Emptiness and won from there on.

Sideboard:
In:
2 Trap Stun and 2 Mystical.

Out:
1 Beast, 1 Sorcerer, Burst Rebirth and 1 Veiler.

Game 2:
He started with 4 set backrow and I summoned Lyla to destroy 1 backrow (Call of the haunted) and after setting Wiretap and Trap Stun I milled Shaddoll Dragon, Shaddoll Squamata and Breakthrough Skill. So I took out another backrow and drew a card with Shaddoll Beast. My Opponent tried to fight back with a Satellarknight Deneb from the top but couldn´t alter this much advantage in his favor after getting it hit by Effect Veiler.
So I went 8-0 on the first day and even 16-0 in Games, this made me feel pretty confident with the deck and after going to eat at a restaurant, I fell in my bed, asleep in mere seconds.

We got up at 7:30 ate breakfast, showered and headed back to the venue.

Round 9 Jake Quinsee with Burning Abyss 2-1

Game 1:
He won the Dice roll and started the game with a Tour Guide from the Underworld that got hit with an Effect Veiler, but I couldn´t capitalise on that and lost the first game pretty fast against Vanity`s Fiend.

Sideboard:
In:
3 Trap Stun, 2 Prison and Raigeki.

Out:
1 Emptiness, 1 Beast, 1 Effect Veiler, 1 Chaos Sorcerer, Wiretap and Burst Rebirth.

Game 2:
I let him start and he did so with Vanity’s Fiend over a special summoned Burning Abyss and 1 set. I came prepared however and summoned Mathematician sending Shaddoll Dragon, destroying Trap Stun and setting Artifact Sanctum, Trap Stun and Dimensional Prison. After getting his Vanity’s Fiend removed by Dimensional Prison I had the upper hand the whole game and won pretty easily.

Sideboard:
In:
1 Effect Veiler.

Out:
Solemn Warning as we were approaching the timeout.

Game 3:
He Starts with Mathematician sending Graff, malebranche of the burning abyss and getting a Scarm, malebranche of the burning abyss search at the end of turn for Tour Guide from the underworld and a few set backrow. I open with Mathematician, Artifact Sanctum, Raigeki, Veiler, Sinister Shadow Games and Shaddoll Squamata, so I summon Math and it gets hit by Solemn Warning and then I end the turn after setting Sanctum and Shadow Games. He opts for tour guide and I activate sanctum in response before chaining Veiler and getting then chains Vanity’s Emptiness. He attacks and ends. Raigeki clears the board but he sends Mathematician to hand with Compulsory Evacuation Device and Squamata pushes for damage after drawing Shaddoll Fusion. He resummons Math and gets Tour Guide at the end of the turn. I draw Artifact Moralltach and Fuse for El Shaddoll Construct, draw a Trap Stun and get a Shaddoll Falco to the field. So I set the trap Stun after pushing for damage. He just sets 1 monster and ends, so i go ahead and destroy 1 of his set spell/trap at the end of turn and flip Falco to get Dragon. I draw fusion and OTK him with Goyo Guardian and Construct against his spell/trap after sending his monster to the hand with Dragon.

Round 10 against Luke Quinsee with Satellarknight 2-1

Game 1:
He won the dice roll and started with Satellerknight Deneb and some facedowns, I had a pretty mediocre hand and the game dragged on for quite some time. He won in the end with an face up Vanity’s Emptiness and a Performapal Whip Snake on the field so I couldn’t get over it with any normal summon and I didn’t have Shaddoll Squamata or anything in hand to destroy his Emptiness.

Sideboard:
In:
2 Prison, 2 Mystical and 2 Trap Stun.

Out:
2 Chaos Sorcerer, 2 Effect Veiler 1 Beast and Burst Rebirth.

Game 2:
I can’t remember much about this game except that I used Super Polymerisation and won from then on.

Siedboard:
In:
Raigeki

Out:
Solemn Warning

Game 3:
We are nearly in time and it comes down to me having more life points than him and a set Artifact Sanctum against his Stellarknight Delteros and Performapal Whip Snake both of which where summoned this turn. Time is called and he choose’s to destroy the backrow and so I was able to use Sanctum to destroy both Monsters with Artifact Moralltach with the Sanctum effect, he used Whip Snake to switch Moralltachs stats and got Satellarknight Vega with Delteros’ effect to summon SatellarKnight Altair to XYZ-summon Ragna Zero destroying my Moralltach and getting to draw a card. As I´m staring down Ragnazero and 3 facedown cards I can only hope to top deck, so I do and set my freshly drawn Shaddoll Squamata. After summoning another Whip Snake he goes on to attack my Squamata and I´m able to destroy the monster that didn’t attack yet. In my last turn of time I draw Shaddoll Falco and set it. As my opponent doesn´t have another monster he scoops.

Round 11 against Reto Canova with Shaddoll 2:0

Both games are pretty similar as he has doesnt have a good hand but mine is okay, so I get to play and he doesn’t.
So I finished Swiss with a record of 11-0 only losing 2 games, you could say I was pretty pumped.

After the Standings were finalized I knew that I was playing against Marcello Barberi in a Mirror Match, which made me feel quite uneasy as he was also called the luckiest person at the YCS because he was 33rd at the first standings but as they were corrected he got 32nd.

Top 32 Marcello Barberi Shaddoll 0:2

Game 1:
He wins the dice roll and goes first. We both have pretty solid hands and the game goes on for a little bit before he summons Mathematician getting Felis, lightsworn archer, where I need to protect my field with Sanctum before he can summon Black Rose Dragon. After getting his Felice destroyed he summons Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and the game is pretty much over at this point.

Sideboard:
Exactly as against the other Shaddoll matchups.

Game 2:
I let him start and he does so with a Monster and Spell/Trap face down. I have Shaddoll Hedgehog, Raiza, Sinister Shadow Games, Solemn Warning, Super Polymerization and Artifact Moralltach. So I set Hedgehog and my spells/traps. After him flipping Hedge, getting Shaddoll Fusion, he summons Raiza which gets negated by Solemn Warning before my Shadow games meets the same fate in Trap Stun. I also get a Fusion with Hedge but can only Poke for 800 damage. The game goes on and gets to a point where I have to use a pretty unfavorable Super Polymerization and I also have to put my Black Luster Solider – Envoy of the Beginning on the field in quite the same fashion only to getting it destroyed by Felice and afterwards struck again by his BLS.

After the game I was very devastated because it pretty much seemed that he had all the answers to the cards I put on the table, therefore not even getting a fighting chance.

I still think that the YCS in London is the best of the whole year as the Comic Con is just around the corner, even though I didn’t get to see anything there as it´s always over after finishing in the Top Cut.

And always Remember, “Play Fair or go Home“.
