Galileo De Obaldia, 3rd Place

Here´s a quick summary of my national tournament where I placed 3rd. I was looking for the four-peat, having won in 2009, 2011 & 2012, unfortunately I missed out on a second tournament in a row (Having placed 2nd at YCS Colombia last month).

The Swiss Rounds
The swiss rounds were very competitive, and I had to overcome a lot of difficult duels to end in 1st place after swiss with a 6 wins – 0 losses – 1 draw record. I faced 1 Nekroz, 1 Constellar, 1 Satellar & 4 Shaddolls. My original prediction for the metagame given the information I had was 2 Satellar, 2 Nekroz and 3 Shaddolls. This made my deck choices close to optimal for the tournament.

One duel particularly stands out from the others. Against a good friend in round 5, he had a field of 2 backrows, 2 in hand, Winda, Anomalilith & Clear Wing Synchro Dragon. I hung on with Valkyrus, protecting a Ju until I could make a play. The epic come back was to summon Denko to shut off the backrows, playing Book of Moon on El Shaddoll Anoyatyllis and Kaleido´ing into Unicore. Due to Winda having been summoned from the grave, I had to run it over with Unicore, before I could proceed with any more plays.
I then cycle´d Valkyrus by tributing Shurit, and searched Trishula. I then made Castel with Unicore & the Ju to get rid of the Clear Wing Synchro Dragon. I then unicore´d back a Clausulas to search Mirror, to summon Trishula with Djinn (In grave from the early game when I was hanging on defending my life points) & Brionac to get rid of the Anomalilith. Finally, tributing Valkyrus & Castel to clear my board in case of Raigeki.
With his backrows frozen, being under Djinn lock and only 1 card in hand, he scooped when he saw his draw.

The Top Cut
Top 8 (2-1) I played a very good player with standard Shaddolls (No stick & chairs). He had a face down s/t, and two face up Mistakes. A set falco & a Construct with one card in hand.
Given that the mistake was there from the beginning, I hadn’t been able to make a play all game. My hand consisted of Dark Hole, Senju of the Thousand Hands, Nekroz Mirror, Nekroz of Brionac, Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz. Additionally, I had a Djinn in graveyard from T1 where I set it. I drew into Unicore & attempted to make Exciton Knight. Unfortunately, his last card in hand was Effect Veiler.
Given that he had 6 cards to my 5, my Exciton was still live so I felt ok…until he topped Book of Moon to clear it. Flipped summon Falco to summon Squamata and swing at my lifepoints.
In my turn, I summoned Shurit and swung at the facedown Squamata. Which he pondered in activating. This made it perfectly clear that he had a facedown El Shaddoll Fusion. A few mind games ensued, and Squamata destroyed the Shurit. Dark Hole cleared the board, but El Shaddoll summoned Winda to continue pressing. I then summoned Brionac with Mirror, banishing Djinn & Shurit. He couldn´t top an out, and lost with the mistakes still face up.
G2 included playing through an Anomalilith for game, but was much more straight forward than G1.
Top 4 (1-2) I was up against the Satellarknight which I faced in swiss. G1 he flipped an early Vanity´s Emptiness which I had no answer to. Which what feels like a million turns later, he destroyed his own Emptiness and made a Soul Charge play into a rank 4 using all 5 of his monsters. Destroying my whole field.
I was very low on resources, but up on life due to Upstart Goblin. I then proceeded to hang on as much as I could while conserving resources until I could play again. With my last 2 ritual spells, and the recycling of them with Unicore, I managed to win in the end. Time was called.
G2 he set a monster & 3 backrow. I summon a Ju (The rest of my hand being unplayable in time – I had another Ju, Valkyrus, Unicore), which he negated with Chaos Trap Hole. He flip summoned his monster & summoned another for game due to time.
G3 I opened Denko Sekka, Effect Veiler & 4 Ritual Spells. Next turn I drew another Effect Veiler. Sigh.
Even though I lost, I felt I did all I could.
Bring on the WCQ.
