2. Mermail

Mermail made its debut at YCS Tacoma, and took up 7/32 playoff slots. In Barcelona, it managed to snag 6/32. Those are not the greatest numbers, but in such a diverse field, it is nothing to laugh about. Much like Fire King, Mermail is an extremely explosive, grave-oriented deck. The practically unstoppable “Genex Undine” gets the ball rolling for Mermail and its Atlantean base open play up to a wide variety of combos. Mermail has amazing boss monsters in “Mermail Abyssmegalo” and “Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord,” which can quickly end the match in Mermail’s favour. The deck even has Synchro access, thanks to “Deep Sea Diva,” but not only generic Synchros, rather game-breaking WATER based ones in “Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier” and “Gungir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier“. On top of that, the threat of Abyss-sphere is so intimidating that it effectively makes opposing backrow removal a liability.

Unfortunately, being grave-oriented, this deck is inherently weak to a wide-spread of grave control cards. Undine may get the ball rolling for this deck most of the time, but it will not be doing that if it is starting off with all copies of “Genex Controller” in hand or if it is starring down a “Thunder King Rai-Oh,” Dimensional Fissure, or Macro Cosmos. Additionally, this deck is somewhat expensive to build and this can be off putting when there are much cheaper alternatives that have more fire power and less risk involved, such as Agent. Finally, the deck does not like to get touched, and it has very little endurance if it starts taking on minuses.

Cosmo Blazer gave Mermail a slight boost with a new “Bahamut Shark” target in “Mermail Abysstrite” and to an extent, the TCG exclusive “Mermail Abyssteus” may see some play, but the remainder of support was pretty negligible. Mermail will definitely benefit from Blackship, and may even get some utility out of Dire Wolf, but all and all, there will be no substantial changes to the Mermail strategy.

Estimated Win-Percentage:

  • vs. Agent, 50.00%
  • vs. Fire, 40.00%
  • vs. Rabbit, 40.00%
  • vs. Wind-Up, 50.00%
